The History of Caran d’Ache
The name Caran d’Ache comes from the pseudonym of Emmanuel Poiré (1858–1909), a French illustrator and humorist of Russian origin. Poiré chose the name Caran d’Ache after the Russian word karandash, meaning “pencil”. The name was later adopted by the Swiss maison and became one of the best-known names in the world of writing and drawing instruments.
